A rights group and opposition party say Gambia is experiencing a rising climate of fear as its leader celebrates the 21st anniversary of the military takeover that catapulted him to power.

Yahya Jammeh seized power in a 1994 military coup. His rule has been marred by accusations of rights violations.

Opposition leader Omar Amadou Jallow said for those who believe in human rights and democracy, there is nothing to celebrate. Amnesty International said Wednesday in a report that the human rights situation has deteriorated sharply this year.

Amnesty noted a spike in arrests, detainments and enforced disappearances since a failed coup attempt in December.

Amnesty says the international community and regional bloc have a duty to address Gambia's human rights record.
