Burundi Protesters March to Demand Release of Jailed Journalist

Tuesday, 03 February 2015 10:05 AM EST

Journalists and civil society leaders marched in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, to demand African Public Radio Director Bob Rugurika be released from jail.

Rugurika has been in custody since Jan. 20 on accusations by the state of concealing the identity of a guest on his show who claimed to be involved with the murders of three elderly Italian nuns in September in Burundi. Human-rights groups including Amnesty International have said Rugurika should be freed, and the order from the Burundian police to reveal his source should be taken to the courts.

The protesters on Tuesday were also calling for the completion of an investigation into the murders of the nuns, vice president of a local broadcasters’ association, Patrick Nduwimana, said.
