Argentine Crew Prevents Ghana from Moving Ship

Saturday, 10 November 2012 10:20 AM EST

ACCRA, Ghana — An official of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority says the Argentine crew aboard the seized naval vessel, ARA Libertad, displayed their weapons to turn away port officials who were trying to move the vessel.

The corporate affairs and marketing manager of the ports authority, Kumi Adjei-Sam, told the Associated Press Saturday that the Argentinian crew prevented Ghanaian officials from boarding the vessel on Thursday.

Last week Justice Richard Agyei-Frimpong ruled that the Libertad should be moved away from its current position because it is preventing other vessels from berthing at the port. Ports officials said the ship is costing more than $500,000 per day in lost berthing fees.

Ghana's Foreign Minister Mohammed Mumuni has not yet responded to the show of force by the Argentine crew.
