BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — The head of United Nations peacekeeping operations in Central African Republic says governments that contribute troops accused of sexual abuse must investigate the charges.

Herve Ladsous spoke in Bangui on Tuesday, saying he has contacted ambassadors of the countries. He said if immediate action isn't taken, consequences may result.

The U.N.'s human rights chief on Thursday said staff has turned up a case of alleged sexual abuse of a girl by a French soldier in Central African Republic. The announcement follows other allegations of child sexual abuse by French soldiers that are being investigated.

France deployed troops to Central African Republic in late 2013. A U.N. peacekeeping mission also deployed has been hit by more than a dozen sexual abuse allegations. The mission's leader was forced to resign last month.
