Uganda Confirms Marburg Fever Recently Killed Man

Monday, 06 October 2014 06:56 AM EDT

Uganda's Ministry of Health says a health worker has died of Marburg, a highly infectious disease that manifests as a viral hemorrhagic fever.

The ministry said in a statement received late Sunday that the victim, a 30-year-old man who worked as a radiographer in a Kampala hospital, died on Sept. 28 after having a headache and abdominal pains. He also had diarrhea and vomited blood. It said tests later confirmed the man had Marburg, a disease that belongs in the same family as Ebola.

A total of 80 people who got into contact with the Marburg victim have been quarantined and are being monitored.

Uganda has a history of hemorrhagic fevers, including an outbreak of Ebola in 2000 that killed at least 224 people.
