FIFA President Infantino Visits South Sudan

Wednesday, 23 March 2016 01:27 PM EDT

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — FIFA's new president Gianni Infantino visited South Sudan Wednesday to open the first headquarters of the South Sudan Football Association.

Infantino met with South Sudan's president Salva Kiir and they discussed development of the sport in the country. The FIFA chief also attended an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between South Sudan and Benin at Juba Stadium.

The South Sudan Football Association is the newest member of FIFA after joining in 2012, one year after the East African nation gained independence from Sudan to the north.

The young country's government is struggling for funds due to a drop in worldwide oil prices and an expensive civil war that is in its third year.
