Many Kenyans Go to Work in Capital Despite Call for Stayaway

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Many residents of the Kenyan capital have returned to work despite a call by opposition leader Raila Odinga to stay at home to protest last week's disputed election in which President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner.

However, many street stalls were closed Monday in the Nairobi slum of Mathare, an opposition stronghold where police battled rioters following the Aug. 8 election that Odinga said was fraudulent. The Kenyan election commission says its voting and counting process was not rigged and international observers have praised Kenya's handling of the election.

While tension has been reported in a few areas, the Nairobi police chief, Japheth Koome, says life is returning to normal.

A Kenyan human rights group says police fatally shot 24 people in election violence. Police deny it.
