Mali Arrests Another Suspect in Ivory Coast Beach Attack

Sunday, 17 April 2016 11:17 AM EDT

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Authorities in Mali say they have made another arrest in connection with the March attack by Islamic extremists in Ivory Coast that killed at least 19 people.

Mali's intelligence service said Sunday that special forces arrested a man suspected of being the driver for the jihadis who on March 13 attacked Grand Bassam, a popular tourist destination near Abidjan.

Intelligence service spokesman Modibo Naman Traore said that Alou Doumbia was arrested Saturday in Bamako. He said Doumbia is thought to have transported the attackers.

He said authorities have now detained six suspects on Mali's soil since the Ivory Coast attack, including another man who was a driver for one attacker.

Al-Qaida's North Africa branch claimed responsibility for the beach attack and previous assaults on hotels in Mali and Burkina Faso.
