Wisconsin Republicans passed a highly-controversial bill Wednesday that forces women seeking abortions to get an ultrasound procedure first.
The legislation passed 17-15 after a raucous debate on the Senate floor, with all Republicans for it and all Democrats against,
according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"If you have a loved one who's thinking about terminating their pregnancy, for crying out loud you want them to have full information," said GOP Sen. Mary Lazich, who authored the bill.
She said many women regretted getting an abortion, a practice that "became popular in the '60s. It became the thing to do. You know, you almost had to get one to be a woman."
Democratic Sen. Jon Erpenbach slammed her comments as "delusional."
Democrats were also infuriated that Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald cut off debate on the issue.
"My first advice to the majority leader is that he seeks psychological help," Sen. Bob Jauch told reporters, the Journal Sentinel noted.
The bill requires a doctor or technician to show the patient pictures of the ultrasound and describe to the patient the heartbeat and physical description of the fetus.
The bill includes exceptions to the ultrasound requirement in cases of rape, incest and, medical emergencies.
