The turkeys set to be pardoned by President Donald Trump in what has become a White House tradition arrived in Washington, D.C., and have checked in to the Willard InterContinental Hotel, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday.
Two yet unnamed turkeys, one that will be the National Thanksgiving Turkey accompanied by an alternative turkey, checked in to their luxury accommodations on Sunday.
The National Turkey Federation (NTF), which raises the birds, covers the cost of their lodgings, according to a White House spokesperson. Their names will be announced on Monday and the official White House ceremony will take place Tuesday.
Staying at the Willard is a tradition for each year's turkeys, Axios reported Sunday. The birds in the "presidential flock" are raised at a farm in western Minnesota.
Minnesota school children have made suggestions for names for the birds. This year's event will mark its 70th year, with the first ceremony held when the NTF donated a turkey to then-President Harry Truman in 1947.
Once pardoned, the birds are sent to a new home to retire. Past years' turkeys have gone to farms in Virginia, as well as DisneyWorld, Disney Land and petting zoos, ABC News reported.
