The White House’s coronavirus response coordinator is expected to tell governors on Tuesday that additional doses of the coronavirus vaccine will arrive next week, The Washington Post reports.
Two unnamed sources told the Post that Jeff Zients will inform governors of the news during a conference call that will take place Tuesday afternoon. The vaccine supply is expected to increase from about 8.6 million doses to about 10 million doses, which will be distributed based on population to 64 different jurisdictions in all 50 states, eight territories, and six major cities. The additional vaccine doses will come from Moderna, who make one of the two coronavirus vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States.
The White House declined to comment to the Post.
Moderna has recently increased their projected global target for this year, up to 600 million from 500 million, while Pfizer and BioNTech hope to produce up to 2 billion doses of their vaccine. These companies have already promised to provide at least 100 million doses to the U.S. before the end of March, followed by a further 100 million in the second quarter of 2021.
