NYC Firefighter Shot in Leg While Responding to Blaze

Friday, 14 August 2015 08:15 AM EDT

Authorities say a New York City firefighter has been shot in the leg by a man who barricaded himself inside a house, then set fire to it while authorities were trying to serve a warrant.

Police say it happened shortly before 6 a.m. Friday at a 2-story apartment house on Destiny Court in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island.

Police say U.S. Marshals were attempting to serve a warrant on the man when he set a fire and started shooting.

They say the 54-year-old firefighter was struck in the lower leg. He was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

It's not immediately clear if anyone else was in the house. Police say it remains an active scene.
