NYC Mayor's Fund Raises $125,000 for Collapse Victims

Friday, 10 April 2015 11:40 AM EDT

The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City has raised $125,000 to help people affected by the Manhattan buildings collapse.

First Lady Chirlane McCray, who heads the fund, said Friday she's proud of New Yorkers' efforts to "alleviate some of the pain and sadness" caused by the tragedy.

The fund will collaborate with Lower East Side Ready to distribute the aid starting Monday.

The March 26 explosion and fire destroyed three buildings and severely damaged two others.

Grants will help tenants pay deposits for new housing. They'll also help replace furniture, clothing and other items.

The apparent gas explosion killed restaurant worker Moises Ismael Locon Yac (moy-SEHS' ihs-MY'-ehl loh-KOHN' yak) and diner Nicholas Figueroa.

Yak's body was returned to Guatemala on Thursday. Figueroa's funeral was Tuesday.
