Twitter is stamping out a conspiracy theory that 5G wireless systems are spreading the coronavirus, because of calls to destroy wireless equipment constitutes "harmful activity" in its terms of use.
"We have broadened our guidance on unverified claims that incite people to engage in harmful activity, could lead to the destruction or damage of critical 5G infrastructure, or could lead to widespread panic, social unrest, or large-scale disorder," the Twitter safety team wrote in a statement Wednesday.
Social media accounts have called for widespread attacks on cellular infrastructure and 5G towers to combat the spread of coronavirus.
Twitter has been actively working to curb disinformation on the global coronavirus pandemic and has a web page devoted solely to its policies on the topic.
Among other tweets to have violated terms of use, accounts have spread disinformation about food shortages, according to Twitter.
The 5G conspiracy has been more prevalent in Europe and British government even weighed into debunk the theory, which also was shared on television there, according to TechXplore.
