Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, traveled to Alaska this week to complete her annual Army Reserve duty, where she will assist a Native tribe as part of the Innovative Readiness Training program, Fox News reports.
Gabbard, who joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2003, has twice been deployed to the Middle East and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal after her deployment to Iraq in 2005. The congresswoman’s military experience was a focal point of her campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
While in Alaska, Gabbard will assist with IRT to provide training opportunities that will help improve healthcare, construction, transportation, and cybersecurity in the community.
Hawaii’s Big Island Gazette notes that “residents in her Congressional district have taken advantage of this program through Tropicare, a two-week annual training event during which military medical professionals provide free health care clinics throughout the islands. In past years, the clinics have offered basic dental, medical and optometry examinations, health education classes, and pharmaceutical and laboratory services to the public at no cost, with a focus on underserved communities.”
Gabbard’s congressional staff will remain working on behalf of her constituents during her two-week commitment.
