Millions of pages of financial documents are now in the hands of New York prosecutors as a criminal investigation of Donald Trump enters a potentially perilous phase for the former president, NBC News is reporting.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday had paved the way for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to obtain the tax returns and the financial records as part of a criminal investigation.

The justices had rebuffed Trump’s request to put on hold an Oct. 7 lower court ruling directing his longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, to comply with a subpoena to turn over the materials to a grand jury convened by Vance, a Democrat.

Other than Trump’s tax records, the document were expected to include “any and all statements of financial condition, annual statements, periodic financial reports, and independent auditors’ reports,” according to court documents.

Now, outside experts, including a forensic consulting firm, have been brought in to help review all the records in search of any improprieties, according to NBC News.

“The value of the Mazars documents is not in the disclosure of tax returns — that is available to law enforcement from the tax authorities,” said Andrew Weissmann, who had led the prosecution of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

“Accounting records enable a prosecutor to see how the reported tax numbers were calculated. The underlying data is key to proving criminal intent, as it was in the Manafort investigation.”

Manafort had been sentenced to more than seven years is prison, but Trump pardoned him in December.
