A clinic in Austin, Texas, will be the state's first to provide specialized care for the transgender community, TV station KXAN reported.
The Kind Clinic will not perform gender reassignment surgery, but will provide care at low or no cost when possible, the clinic said.
"While you might be experiencing some difficulty, we have this service for you," Joe McAdams, the clinic's executive director, said. "Please come, let us stand with you. We don't want to speak for the community. We want to provide a platform for the community to speak.”
The clinic will operate using grants and donations, and services are available to anyone, regardless of race, gender identity, or sexual orientation, the clinic announced.
The clinic's opening comes 2 days after Texas lawmakers voted to move forward a “bathroom bill." The bill would require Texans to use the bathroom matching the gender on their birth certificate, KXAN reported.
Just over 125,000 Texans identify as transgender, 0.66 percent of the state’s population. That is the fifth-largest transgender population in the U.S., behind Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and Georgia, according to a UCLA Williams Institute study in 2016.
