Former National Security Adviser John Bolton should be arrested if he keeps refusing to testify in President Donald Trump's impeachment proceedings, writes Daniel Alter in a Time opinion piece.
Bolton would be a major witness in the proceedings, especially if he confirms previous testimony from federal officials that he was deeply concerned about efforts by Trump and his allies to push Ukraine into opening investigations into the president's political rivals. Bolton abruptly left his post in September.
The House Intelligence Committee did not issue a subpoena to Bolton after his attorney threatened to go to court if it was issued.
"We would welcome John Bolton's deposition and he did not appear as he was requested today. His counsel has informed us that unlike three other dedicated public servants who worked for him on the NSC and have complied with lawful subpoenas, Mr. Bolton would take us to court if we subpoenaed him," the official said in a statement provided to CNN.
Alter, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, in the Time piece says the House should "stand firm, subpoena Bolton and – if he refuses to comply – exercise its constitutional authority to detain him until he agrees to testify" since Bolton is a central figure who could "condemn or vindicate the president."
