The Texas warehouse that the U.S. Border Patrol used to detain immigrants, which came under fire for its use of chain-link cages, is temporarily closing for renovations, The Washington Post reports.
The McAllen facility, which opened under President Barack Obama in 2014, was used to house detained immigrants who were found crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Under President Donald Trump, the facility was used to detain migrant families and separate parents from their children under the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy.
The facility will reopen in 2022 with a reduced capacity after removing the chain-link partitions and redesigning the interior with “modern detention areas,” including a children’s recreation area, according to The Associated Press.
The agency also noted that it “consistently revaluates future operational requirements to support the safe and legal processing” of immigrants.
