Ted Nugent: Bryant Gumbel Tells 'Lies' About NRA

By    |   Tuesday, 27 Jan 2015 06:07 PM

Musician Ted Nugent thinks television host Bryant Gumbel doesn't understand guns and should have done his research before making anti-gun statements in an upcoming magazine article.

In an op-ed for the Daily Caller, Nugent writes that America's gun problem doesn't really exist. Rather, he said the breakdown of the American family is what's to blame for the violence.

"Mr. Gumbel is free to wallow in his ignorance, hate and lies that the NRA are pigs and somehow responsible for criminal violence," Nugent writes. "However, if he ever decides to be objective, do a little research, be honest and takes the time to assess the underlying cause for the gun-related mayhem occurring in our urban areas, I'm sure he'll point his outrage at a different target than the NRA."

During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Gumbel lashed out at the National Rifle Association (NRA).

"I think they're pigs. I think they don't care about human life," said Gumbel, who hosts "Real Sports" on HBO.

"There are few things I hate more than the NRA. I mean truly. I think they are a curse upon the American landscape. So we got that on the record."

Gumbel's comments sparked a firestorm of criticism from gun-rights advocates. In his op-ed, Nugent makes the argument that gun violence is not what most Americans think it is.

Citing numbers from the Centers for Disease Control, Nugent writes there are about 30,000 gun-related deaths in America each year. Up to 17,000 of those, according to Nugent, are suicides.

"The majority of the remaining gun-related deaths are surely gang-related and the majority of those doing and doing the killing don't have fathers in the home and the majority of time are on parole, again," Nugent writes. "No new feel-good gun law is going to change that.

"Subtract the number of suicides and fatherless gangsters killing other fatherless gangsters and what you have is an America slightly less violent than Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."

Nugent wrote his story at the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas, which he calls "the safest place on earth" because of all the guns, ammo, "and a substantial army of good, law-abiding citizens."

He argues that what the United States really has is a problem with the family — not weapons.

"America doesn't have a gun problem," Nugent writes. "What America has is a disintegrating family problem that manifests itself in nightly gunfire, blood, and death. That isn't the result of the NRA standing up for our Second Amendment rights."

Nugent is a staunch NRA supporter. He recently posted a photo with himself and fellow musician Kid Rock on Facebook with a cougar they killed while hunting.
