Connecticut taxpayers worked longer last year to pay their 2017 taxes than Americans in the other 49 states, according to the Tax Foundation, a policy research organization in Washington, D.C.
For the third straight year, the foundation listed Connecticut as No. 50 in making it to "Tax Freedom Day," the date taxpayers begin working for themselves after paying federal, state and local taxes.
That date this year is May 21.
"We have to work almost half a year to pay all the taxes to the government," Connecticut state Sen. Len Suzio, told the Hartford Courant, adding, "People are willing to pay a premium to live in a premium location."
Just behind Connecticut are:
- New Jersey (May 13).
- New York (May 11).
- Massachusetts (May 5).
- California (May 1).
Taxpayers in Mississippi were the first in the U.S. to win "tax freedom," paying their federal, state and local taxes by April 5. The Magnolia State is followed by:
- Tennessee (April 7).
- South Dakota (April 8).
- New Mexico and Alabama, which tie (April 9).
