Actress Louise Linton, the wife of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, apologized for her controversial remarks on Instagram and admits she was completely out of touch.
Her comments came in an interview with Washington Life magazine.
Linton had been harshly criticized after sharing a photo of her leaving a government plane with her husband in Kentucky, The Hill noted.
She also included hashtags for the fashion brands she was wearing.
One Instagram user called her "deplorable" and said "Glad we could pay for your little getaway. Linton then shot back: "Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self-sacrifice to your country?
But Linton admitted she made a mistake.
"I want to say I concede completely to the comments of my critics. My post itself and the following response were indefensible. Period," she told the magazine. "I don't have any excuses, nor do I feel any self-pity for the backlash I experienced. I sincerely take ownership of my mistake. It's clear that I was the one who was truly out of touch and my response was reactionary and condescending."
Asked what she would say now to the woman who criticized her posting, she responded: "I would say I'm very sorry, sincerely."
And discussing the overall criticism of her post, Linton added: "I feel like I deserved the criticism and my response is 'thanks for waking me up quickly for turning me back in the right direction.'"
