Spring break at the popular South Beach destination might be in jeopardy as local officials are considering the coronavirus response to that of a hurricane warning.
"I liken this to a hurricane threat," Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez told reporters, the Miami Herald reported. Miami-Dade County has a mayor, as does the City of Miami, Mayor Francis Suarez.
Generally, hurricane threats mean warnings advising travelers to avoid South Florida.
Also, March 20, Miami is hosting the popular Ultra music festival, and its status is now tenuous as Florida has two "presumptive positive" cases of coronavirus.
"We haven't come up with any specific recommendations yet," Gimenez told the Herald. "Those are things we're going to be discussing in the next week. Are there any precautions, is there anything different, we're going to do with spring break or with Ultra?"
While Florida is a very transient locale for the coronavirus, its cases in a warmer climate seems to debunk the notion the virus would burn out in the late spring or summer as Trump administration might have hoped.
"We want to remind persons to clean their fingers frequently," Gimenez said. "Use hand sanitizer. Cover their face with an arm [if they cough].
"A nod is much better than a handshake or a kiss."
