President Donald Trump initially viewed Monday's solar eclipse without protective glasses – squinting into the sun from the White House balcony.

Though the president, first lady Melania Trump, and their son Barron all had solar eclipse glasses as they took in the sight from the Truman balcony overlooking the South Lawn, Trump initially peeked up without eye protection.

According to the White House pool report, an aide shouted "don't look" at the president as he gestured toward the sun, McClatchy news reported.

Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage, experts have warned.

As the peak of the eclipse approached, Trump donned the protective eyewear.

Washington had an approximate 80 percent eclipse.
