Social media interactions about the coronavirus pandemic have dropped significantly, falling from a high of almost 800 million mentions in April to about 62 million in September, Axios reports.
According to data compiled by NewsWhip, coronavirus interactions, which include likes, comments, and shares on social media, have dropped by 88% since March, when the outbreak began, by 62% since July, and by 36% since August. Google Trends shows that searches related to the coronavirus have fallen dramatically after hitting a peak in March, now having fallen to their pre-pandemic levels.
NewsWhip found that the top stories in April, May, June, July, and September were all about the coronavirus pandemic and the response to it. Recent reports about the new book on President Donald Trump from Bob Woodward have put the president's response to the outbreak back in the forefront, with four of of the top five election-related stories on Wednesday stemming from news that Trump intentionally downplayed the severity of the coronavirus.
Axios notes that “Despite the downturn in interest, as long as the coronavirus is a central feature of everyday life, it continues to hamper Trump's reelection bid. His 39% approval rating on handling the virus is a 10-point drop from early April and sits below his overall approval rating (43%).”
