GOP's Alan Simpson Backs Gay Marriage in Ad

Former Wyoming Republican Sen. Alan Simpson has made a television commercial supporting gay marriage, Politico reported.

Simpson, 82, takes a matter-of-fact "live and let live" approach to the issue. "I'm a Republican. The party's basic core is, government out of your life and the right to be left alone," he says.

A Denver-based U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals with jurisdiction for Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming and New Mexico, will be hearing a same-sex marriage case on Thursday, The Denver Post reported.

The ad will be seen locally in Wyoming, Oklahoma and Colorado, on the Sunday talk shows nationally, and on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN cable channels.

Freedom to Marry is sponsoring the campaign. "We're really hopeful this will do enough to spark conversation, to make sure people see it as marking the next step in the movement toward freedom to marry nationwide," Evan Wolfson, the group's founder, told Politico.

In the 30-second spot, Simpson says: "Whether you're gay or lesbian or straight, if you love someone and you want to marry them, marry them." He also says, "I've had a wonderful married life. Why shouldn't somebody else have the joy of marriage? Live and let live. It's very simple."

Simpson served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 20 years establishing a reputation for bipartisanship and speaking his own mind, according to Politico.
