The Texas Department of Transportation on Thursday overruled a decision by its Houston district office to stop giving directions to gun shows via its freeway message signs, following last month’s deadly shooting in Newtown, Conn.
According to the
Houston Chronicle, the district office suspended the use of the signs for gun show directions after people complained about them in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings that left 20 children and six adults dead.
State transportation spokeswoman Veronica Beyer said the district office had "made an error" with its decision because the signs play an important role in helping to direct traffic and improve road safety during large public events.
According to the Chronicle, the decision to stop providing gun show directions came after several complaints were received about road messages for the High Caliber Gun and Knife Show at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The gun show opened the day after the Dec. 14th shooting in Newtown.
Gun shows are regularly held at the convention center, typically every other month, and the state transportation department treats them like any other event by providing directions to motorists.
