California School District Pulls Sex-Ed Book After Parent Complaints

By    |   Sunday, 10 August 2014 09:42 PM EDT

California's Fremont Unified School District will not be using a controversial sex education book until parents' concerns can be addressed, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Parents complained about what they called inappropriate references to masturbation, sex toys, and bondage in the textbook, titled "Your Health Today." The book is aimed at 14-year-old ninth graders.

More than 1,500 people signed a petition to have the book removed. Some, like Asfia Ahmed, said the material sounded like it was aimed at college-level students.

"It doesn't relate to these kids at all," she told the Chronicle.

The district said it will meet with the book's publisher, McGraw-Hill, to make age-appropriate changes that address parents' concerns.

"Administration and staff believes the textbook will be an asset to our health curriculum in that it provides the current, accurate, factual and relevant information our students need to make responsible decisions about their health," Superintendent Jim Morris said.

Until then, the district will use the previous health textbook.

Morris had initially defended the book's use and said that parents could have their children opt out of the class.
