A majority of American voters cannot name a Supreme Court justice, a survey showed Monday.

The C-Span report – released the same day confirmation hearings started for President Donald Trump's high court nominee, Neil Gorsuch – found 57 percent of voters could not name a high court justice, while 43 percent could.

For those who did name a jurist, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, was the most frequently picked, with 16 percent, the survey showed; Chief Justice John Roberts followed, at 12 percent, and Justice Clarence Thomas was named by 10 percent.

Just 3 percent named Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan were named by 1 percent. No one named Justice Stephen Breyer, who was confirmed under President Bill Clinton, the survey showed.

Nevertheless, 90 percent of voters agreed decisions made by the U.S. Supreme Court have an impact on their everyday lives as citizens; also, 76 percent of voters think TV coverage of the high court's oral arguments ought to be allowed.

The online survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.05 percentage points.
