Scott Walker Signs Asbestos Bill

By    |   Thursday, 27 March 2014 02:26 PM EDT

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill on Thursday that changes the procedure for filing asbestos exposure lawsuits, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The legislation is opposed by veterans groups, trial lawyers, and Democrats who believe it could delay justice to those ill from asbestos exposure, according to the newspaper.

Asbestos-producing companies — as they went bankrupt — created trusts to pay legal claims. The new legislation requires plaintiffs to disclose any actions against trusts that they have filed or plan to file.

Supporters say the legislation stops people from trying to collect twice, while opponents say it makes it difficult for victims to fully collect.
