The wife of imprisoned Saudi journalist Raif Badawi has requested a meeting with President Donald Trump so she can urge him to push for her husband’s release in the wake of the disappearance of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
"I hope to meet with him as many leaders around the world stand up with me and my case," Ensaf Haider said of President Donald Trump in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
“As a wife who lost her husband..,” Haider wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “As a mother who can't answer her kids hard questions.. Please help me Mr. President @realDonaldTrump to bring my hero husband to home from a Saudi prison!#FreeRaif”
Badawi, the former editor of the website Free Saudi Liberals, was arrested on charges of “insulting Islam through electronic channels,” and “going beyond the realm of obedience,” in 2012. He was officially sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes, of which he received 50, and a hefty fine.
Trump said last week to reporters in the Oval Office that he is “not familiar” with Badawi’s case.
"When you say release the journalist, who are you talking about?" Trump asked before being told of Badawi’s situation, according to the Examiner. "That I'd have to look into. I'm not familiar with that."
