Two years after he says he settled the issue with the IRS, Ron Paul says the agency is again demanding a list of donors to his group Campaign for Liberty.
"They're after us. They want money from us," Paul told Fox News Channel's
"Your World with Neil Cavuto" on Wednesday.
A letter from the Internal Revenue Service posted on Campaign for Liberty's website shows a fine of $12,900 for an "incomplete filing." Paul said there will be additional daily fines as the group's lawyers and accountants craft a response.
Paul said he does not want to disclose the donor list because a Supreme Court ruling in 1958 in favor of the NAACP said 501(c)4 groups do not have to disclose donors for fear of political retribution.
Such groups were targeted by the IRS
for special scrutiny leading up to the 2012 presidential election. Most of those targeted were conservative groups, and they have said they were targeted for their political affiliations.
Host Neil Cavuto asked whether Paul thinks his group was targeted because his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul,
is considering a run for the White House in 2016.
"I guess almost anything is possible in government," Paul responded.
