President Donald Trump should wear a mask to set an example for the public amid the coronavirus pandemic, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield said on Tuesday, The Washington Times reported.
“Glad to see the president wear a mask this week and the vice president, and clearly in their situation they could easily justify that they don’t need to because of all the testing around them and they know they’re not infected,” Redfield said during a livestreamed interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association.
But Redfield emphasized that “we need them to set the example… for other individuals,” adding that “if we [can] get everybody to wear a mask right now, I really do think over the next 4, 6, 8 weeks we can bring this epidemic under control.”
Trump donned a mask in public for the first time on Saturday, almost three months after the CDC recommended the use of face coverings when social distancing isn’t possible, The Hill reported.
The president has argued that he doesn’t need to wear a mask, because he is tested for the coronavirus on a regular basis.
