Rhode Island Speaker Will Step Down After Raid

Saturday, 22 March 2014 05:41 PM EDT

Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox says he is resigning from his leadership post and will not run for re-election, a day after federal and state authorities raided his Statehouse office and home.

Fox, a Democrat, said in a written statement sent Saturday evening that he will not let Friday's raids distract his colleagues from addressing the challenges facing the state. He said he wants to focus on his family and dealing with the investigation.

The raids were part of an investigation by the U.S. attorney's office, FBI, IRS,and state police. Officials haven't said whom or what they are investigating.
