In light of President Barack Obama's threat to use executive action to bring about immigration reform, House and Senate Republican leaders have been working behind closed doors on possibly introducing their own immigration measures to enact reform in pieces, sources say.
According to sources in both the House and Senate, GOP lawmakers are considering passing two immigration measures — one that would focus on border security and one that would make changes to the current visa policy for high skilled workers,
Politico is reporting.
Republicans are currently debating how to combat Obama's executive actions, including defunding the government or passing a measure that would force Obama to enforce the existing laws.
If Republican lawmakers pass their own immigration measures, the sources said, it will make Obama look like he's overreaching by using executive action when Congress shows a willingness to do work on immigration reform.
House Speaker John Boehner would not reveal any possible immigration measures Tuesday.
"While we are continuing to listen to Members and discuss options, there have been no specific discussions between the Speaker's office and Sen. McConnell's office about moving immigration bills at this point, except in direct response to the President Obama's executive amnesty scheme," said Boehner's spokesman Michael Steel.
