Reality Winner, the National Security Agency translator who was convicted of leaking classified documents, has contracted coronavirus in federal prison.
Billie Winner-Davis, Reality's mother, said that 40% of inmates at the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, including her daughter, had contracted the virus. Winner is still asymptomatic but her mother is worried about her safety.
In all, more than 500 inmates and staff at the facility have contracted coronavirus.
Winner was convicted in 2018 of leaking a classified intelligence document on Russian election meddling.
“This could happen to any one of us. Just because someone is an inmate in a prison doesn't mean that they are less than human. They are still loved,” Winner-Davis said. “Reality, like many other nonviolent first offenders, doesn't deserve this. This is torture. This could possibly even be a death sentence.”
In April, a federal judge denied a request from Winner to finish the rest of her five-year prison sentence in home confinement. She claimed she had bulimia and respiratory illness that would make her more susceptible to suffering from coronavirus.
