In the wake of this week's riots that have shaken Baltimore, American Federation of Teachers union President and Randi Weingarten is blaming "inequality, bias, and racism" for the violence, according to the Daily Caller.
The website said it received a press release from Weingarten and union executive Lorreta Johnson (a native of Baltimore), declaring they were "anguished" by the violence there.
"We condemn the inequality, bias and racism that spawn these cycles of violence," the pair said. "In communities across the country, we've seen that just as violence begets violence, extending an open hand helps unclench fists. Today, Baltimore educators joined with community members to clean up damage in neighborhoods."
The pair called for increased funding for education, terming expenditures for public schools "one of the smartest investments a city can make."
