A majority of voters disagree with President Donald Trump's assertion that certain news organizations are "the enemy of the American people," according to a new poll.
A Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday found that 58 percent disagree with Trump's declaration, while 39 percent agree.
The issue breaks down along party lines:
- 86 percent of Democrats disagree with Trump's assessment.
- 17 percent of Republicans disagree.
- 81 percent of GOP voters agree with Trump.
- 10 percent of Democrats feel the same.
The poll also found that 53 percent of voters trust the media more than Trump "to tell you the truth about important issues;" 37 percent disagreed.
Other findings:
- 53 percent of the voters disapprove of the way the media has covered Trump.
- 60 percent disapprove of the way the president talks about the media, the poll showed.
- 89 percent of American voters say it is "very important" or "somewhat important" that the news media hold public officials accountable.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percent.
