The growing acceptance of both legalized recreational marijuana use and same-sex marriage is part of a rapid cultural and social revolution that is dividing the United States, Republican pundit Pat Buchanan says.
"You're going to have a lot of potheads, obviously, tens of thousands of people," Buchanan said Monday on
Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."
Colorado began allowing the legal sale of marijuana within its borders on Jan 1.
"It's part of this cultural, social revolution which is really gaining speed, you're seeing it with same-sex marriage, and dividing the country," he said.
Gun control, another deeply divisive issue, also played into Colorado politics last year as two state senators lost recall elections after voting to increase gun control in the state. Also, 11 Colorado counties held a vote to secede from the state because they said the capital was too liberal. The vote didn't pass, but five counties favored it.
America is racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse, Buchanan noted.
"It is now becoming morally, culturally, and socially fragmented," he said.
Pointing to Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.'s 1991 book
"The Disuniting of America," which warned of the dangers of putting too much emphasis on differences, Buchanan said, "That's what's taking place before our eyes."
