President Donald Trump fired back at media reports he has sought the advice of the likes of sports icons Tom Brady and, more recently, Alex Rodriguez amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
Responding to an ABC News report Trump reached out to A-Rod, Trump tweeted:
"More Fake News!"
Trump is spending more and more effort during daily coronavirus task force briefings responding to media reports of anti-Trump criticism of the White House's response to, and actions during, the pandemic.
Earlier this week, Trump had to reject a report that claimed the president asked for Tom Brady's help during the pandemic. While Trump admitted talking to Brady recently, he told reporters it was fake news to suggest he needed to call on Brady to assist the response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The briefings were intended to keep the American people informed, but Trump – who had previously ended the daily briefings because they had evolved in opportunities for media attacks on the administration – is facing a new wave of negativity from the White House press corps.
He took to Twitter to beat it back again over the past 24 hours.
Trump tweeted Saturday morning:
"So much of the Lamestream Media is writing and broadcasting stories with facts that are made up and knowingly wrong. They are doing it by quoting unnamed sources that simply do not exist. These are very dangerous & corrupt people, who will do anything to win. NAME YOUR SOURCES!"
Trump continued via Twitter:
"One of the reasons that Fake News has become so prevalent & far reaching is the fact that corrupt 'journalists' base their stories on SOURCES that they make up in order to totally distort a narrative or story. When you see, 'five sources say,' don't believe the story, it is...."
Adding in an ensuing tweet:
"....very often FAKE NEWS. Lamestream Media should be forced to reveal sources, very much as they did in the long ago past. If they did that, the media would be trusted again, and Fake News would largely be a thing of the past!"
