California's Obamacare Glitches Keep Latinos From Signing Up

By    |   Wednesday, 22 January 2014 02:01 PM EST

Glitches in California's Affordable Care Act enrollment system are preventing Latinos from signing up.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the state's push to reach uninsured Latinos has stalled and is drawing criticism.

State lawmakers told the newspaper that Covered California, the state's Obamacare exchange, has a shortage of enrollment counselors and was late in publishing a paper application in Spanish.

"This is all about the customer experience," state Sen. Norma Torres told The Times.

"We are putting obstacle after obstacle in front of people and we are preventing them from getting the healthcare they deserve."

Despite the state's huge Latino population, only about 20 percent of enrollees have described themselves as Latino.

The state is now attempting to remedy the low Latino turnout with targeted advertising and mailings.
