Taxis have long been a go-to choice for New Yorkers in a hurry. But the city wants to break the step-on-it habit.
Under recent proposals from Mayor Bill de Blasio, cabs could be outfitted with black-box-style data recorders and devices that would sound warnings — or even pause the fare meter — for going too fast. And meanwhile, speed limits on most city streets could drop from 30 to 25 mph.
Traffic-safety advocates applaud the ideas. De Blasio says New York's signature yellow cabs "set the tone on our streets."
But cabbies fear friction with passengers and feel they're being scapegoated. Riders say they're torn between the drive for safety and the need for speed.
The city Taxi and Limousine Commission says it's exploring the ideas.
