NC Teen Adviser Wants to Put God in Schools

A 16-year-old North Carolina girl has big plans for this school year: She wants to press for agricultural programs and God in school.

Amberly Phillips, a junior at North Johnston High School, is one of two student advisers to the state Board of Education. She doesn’t get to vote on issues, but she will serve as a liaison to let board members know what’s important to kids.

“I think I’m most excited about being able to give my opinion,” Phillips told The News & Observer. “I’m very opinionated.”

Although she understands that school budgets are tough, Phillips told the paper she thinks it’s important to keep agricultural programs in schools. She also believes schools should have a focus on God, instead of keeping religion separate.

The Kenly teen, who attends Selma Tabernacle Church of God, is chaplain of the Future Farmers of America club at her school and is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at North Johnston.
