SC Legislator: NC Bathroom Bill a 'Double Edged Sword' for Us

There’s good news and bad news for South Carolina on how the North Carolina’s controversial bathroom bill will affect the Palmetto State.

Business leaders tell The State newspaper that businesses opposed to the discriminatory law passed by the Tar Heel State might move over the border, providing a financial bonanza for South Carolina.

But businesses on the South Carolina border that align with Charlotte, N.C. could be hurt by nearby businesses pulling out or canceling their expansion plans, according to The State.

“[It’s a] double-edged sword,” Lancaster County Administrator Steve Willis told the newspaper. “It could help us, but it could hurt us.”

The North Carolina law — which forces transgender people to use public bathrooms corresponding to the sex designated on their birth certificates — has caused a national storm of protest.

Rock stars like Bruce Springsteen have cancelled performances and companies like PayPal and Deutsche Bank have put off expansion plans.

Last week, the White House issued new guidelines from the Justice and Education Departments instructing public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that corresponded to their gender identity, rather than what is listed on their birth certificate.
