Democratic state attorneys general from over around the country have asked the Supreme Court to reject an attempt from the Trump campaign to block a due date for an extended mail ballot in North Carolina, according to The Hill.

Last week, the Trump campaign and high ranking Republican state lawmakers requested the court reverse lower court rulings that dialed mail-in ballot due date by six days.

Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia claimed, in a friend-of-the-court brief, the new deadline in North Carolina constituted a reasonable accommodation given the coronavirus pandemic and potential Postal Service delays.

About 1.4 million voters in North Carolina have asked for mail ballots for the Nov. 3 election. That is a seven-fold increase from the same time in 2016.

"As the primary managers of the election process and protectors of the public health, states have an obligation to protect each citizen's constitutional right to vote while ensuring that this right can be exercised safely," they wrote.
