The coronavirus-spooked New York Giants and Jets are reportedly pulling coaches and scouts off the road at a time player evaluations are underway ahead of the National Football League draft.
The road trips are suspended for the foreseeable future, the New York Post reported.
Though the NFL is in its offseason, coaches and scouts travel during the period, the Post noted. The Giants had representatives on the campuses of Oklahoma and Wisconsin, watching and speaking with the many NFL prospects at those two schools Wednesday.
According to the Post, the NFL has not banned visits for pre-draft players, though NFL teams have begun canceling visits at their discretion amid the U.S. coronavirus outbreak. NFL teams are allowed to bring in 30 draft-eligible players for workouts, interviews and medical examinations at their team facilities, the Post noted.
The draft is set to begin April 23.
But the Post reported the retreat of scouts and coaches on the road is not significant.
"There's so much information on guys,’" Giants general manager Dave Gettleman told the Post. "We have a director of security; we have all these media people. We research the heck out of guys. Obviously, you have friends in the league. 'Hey, there's a guy on such and such team, you were there last year, can you tell me about him if you're not interested in him?' But you have to be proactive about that."
