Department of Justice official Kevin Carwile, who has been in charge of the Department of Justice's death penalty unit, has been removed from his post following complaints of gender bias and a hostile work environment.

According to The New York Times, which looked into the complaints, Carwile has been assigned to a different division after being demoted for allowing a culture of "favoritism and sexism."

The Times reported that Carwile was moved after it contacted the DOJ.

Sources told the newspaper that Carwile's deputy had allegedly groped an administrative assistant in front of his colleagues, and Cawile asked witnesses to keep the matter a secret.

The deputy, who was not named, remains at the DOJ.

The Times reported that DOJ employees contacted the inspector general, the Equal Opportunity Commission, and Justice Department officials about Carwile and the death penalty unit at least a dozen times, but the complaints were largely ignored.

A DOJ spokesman refused specific disciplinary actions the department would take or to comment on personnel action.
