Claim: Thousands of NY Residents Fail to Comply With Gun Law

A little more than 44,000 assault-style weapons have been registered in the state of New York following the passage of gun legislation in 2013, far fewer than the estimate of 1 million.

According to the Albany Times Union, the figures show gun owners could potentially be breaking the law by not registering their firearms.

Called the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, or the NY SAFE Act, the legislation went into effect two and a half years ago under Gov. Andrew Cuomo. According to the Times Union, which cites figures from the New York State Police, 23,847 state residents have registered assault-style weapons. The latest figures show those people have registered 44,485 weapons that fall under the assault weapons category.

Under the law, several dozen rifles are considered assault weapons, along with a handful of shotguns and even some handguns.

"What these numbers expose is that, if there are people who are willfully ignoring the law, that means tens of thousands of gun owners are not complying with a law that is supported by New Yorkers," Leah Gunn Barrett, the executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, told the New York Daily News.

The controversial law was not warmly received in small villages and towns, particularly in northern portions of the state.

"Many people have been calling for a full repeal of the SAFE Act. It would appear the people have just bypassed the legislature and simply repealed it on their own," Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, told the Daily News.

New York released the gun registration figures after more than 2,000 Freedom of Information Law requests were filed last year. In May, a judge ordered the governor's office to make the data public.
