The number of shootings in New York City increased more than 120% in October year over year, Fox News reports.
According to the New York Police Department, the city saw a surge in shootings, but a slight decrease in murders, when compared to the same time period last year.
During the month of October, police logged 137 shootings. In October 2019, there were 62 shootings reported. The number of murders was down 2.8% with 35 this year, compared to 36 last October.
Overall, New York City has seen an increase in murders and shootings in the first 10 months of this year. In 2020, the department has reported 387 murders in the first 10 months of the year. In the first 10 months of 2019, there were only 282 murders logged. So far, police have reported 1,299 shootings to date this year, which is a 93.9% increase from the 670 recorded year-to-date in 2019.
