Amtrak officials are mulling track closures at New York City's Pennsylvania Station for much-needed repair — a move that would create disruptions for tens of thousands of commuters, the New York Times reported.
After two recent train derailments, infrastructure overhaul has become urgent, but closing tracks would mean delays and route changes for two of the nation's largest railroads that rely on Penn Station: New Jersey Transit and the Long Island Rail Road, the Times reported.
According to the Times, officials are considering closing several tracks for days or weeks at a time over the next couple of months.
"This renewal effort will replace and rejuvenate the selected infrastructure providing needed updates and is different than the ongoing repair work [at Penn Station]," Christina Leeds, a spokeswoman for Amtrak, told the Times.
"We'll have more on the plans in the coming days and will be working with LIRR and NJT to schedule this work and minimize service impacts."
Commuters were furious.
